A late entry into the shipping wars
Apr. 12th, 2008 09:36 pmI first began to hang out round the edges of HP fandom long after HBP, so I missed most of the Shipping Wars. It always seemed perfectly obvious to me that JKR intended for Harry and Ginny to get together, and Ron and Hermione were also destined for each other.
Nonetheless, I have pretty catholic tastes (and low standards) for what I'll read in fanfic. I particularly enjoy a well-written Hermione shipped with almost anyone. Especially Charlie. *grin* But notice that almost?
I'll read: Draco/Hermione (though usually with a giggle), Viktor/Hermione, Fred or George (or Fred and George, on occasion)/Hermione, in fact, any Weasley brother/Hermione, Oliver/Hermione, Dobby/Hermione (not really, just checking to see if you're still reading. *g*). I've even read (though I can't say I've enjoyed) Snape/Hermione.
But today I have discovered that the 'almost' anyone does not extend in one specific direction. I cannot and will not read Harry/Hermione. It's just wrong. I was reading a post on my friends of friends list in which someone was admitting to always having had a thing for Harry and Hermione, citing Order of the Phoenix as evidence for this. I had to restrain myself from leaving a comment telling this stranger how wrong she was and ordering her to go and read the book again, this time with her eyes open. And people who are still writing Harry/Hermione seem to me to be deliberately and offensively sticking two fingers up at JKR. I don't mind things that aren't canon-compliant. I like a good AU and EWE. But Harry/Hermione seems to be written in the spirit of 'I understand these characters better than the author and this is what really happened.' It's profoundly arrogant.
And stupid. Because Harry would drive Hermione round the bend in seconds and probably vice versa.
So there we go. *awaits flames with an air of unconcerned nonchalance*
