[Poll #1145373]

It's neck and neck! Though [livejournal.com profile] white_hart has been no help at all, voting for both 'Yes, think of the icons' and 'No, you're a poor student'. I'm the one with the dilemma - you're supposed to solve it. *g* This has also made the voting and the percentages appear skewed wrongly.

Well I thought LJ is the evil one (not teh). They are always screwing up something. Threatening censorship (this thing or the other). They owned now by Russians. They has passed through various owners. So who knows how long this will last?

I don't think there's any likelihood of me suddenly being censored. No NC-17 fic or child-porn artses here. And I don't think one shouldn't give them money just because they are now owned by Russians. But I take the point that they do seem a bit inclined to change policies on a whim and that could be frustrating if you'd paid good money.

When I first came on LJ. It seemed fine. I was considering buying an account, when all of the sudden there began a mass deletion of accounts. Granted some of them were illegal (as far as age goes) but they were also yanking accounts from writers and artists. When many posters went up in arms about it, they seem to back down. They even appologized and said with new guide lines it would be alright. A few months later, it started up again. Many of the posters I communicated with left to go to Insane Journal, etc. I didn't want to leave, but I opened up two accounts on two other journals. I decided to wait it out. The owners sold the journal to someone else, kept it a few months. I began to have a whole bunch of technical problems they would or could not fix. It was sold again. This time overseas.

It seems pretty quite now, but it was not before. I never ended up posting on the other journals. Anyway, I don't know the new owners will treat us, so far, so good. I just don't trust them or the climate they created when they suddenly deleted accounts.

Well, I think you should go for paid - not only to get room for loads of icons, but also to avoid all the ads. Because, when you have a paid account, you don't see the ads on other people's journals, no matter how many ads they have. To me, you're all ad-free, and I love that. But, if you feel strongly that being a poor student is a big part of your identity, then maybe you should wait. I was annoyed at first that LJ ended up on Russian hands, but I decided to be magnanimous and trust them. There has to be honest Russians around as well... hopefully even in big corporations.

Yes, because then you get to edit comments, which is often a relief to me.

Hmm. I'm not really a fan of the edit comments feature. I get sent email notification of comments so it means I often end up replying to a comment which has since been (in LJ's mind) deleted - though it then appears elsewhere in edited form. I wish people would (a) read their comments before clicking send and (b) just leave another comment with corrections if they need to.

I thought that that was what happened when people couldn't edit comments and deleted and reposted them instead - editing seems to leave the comment where it was which means that if someone was replying while the commenter was editing the reply doesn't end up out of sequence...

I said "Yes" because I always like to encourage people to spend money they don't have. It makes me feel better about being tight with my own money!

Sorry! But I do think that both of those are valid points...

I voted both yes and other, so I'll explain myself. :) Perhaps you could start by trying out the paid account for a couple of months, to see if you think it's worth it before purchasing a longer term.

Good thought, though it is much cheaper if you buy 12 months at a time.

I voted 'other', but it's more like a qualified 'yes'. I have a paid account, and I enjoy it. I'm a big believer in having the small indulgences of life, so my answer depends on whether or not you'll really enjoy having the paid account or not. If you want it, then I say go for it. The cost isn't too much, and if it gives you more of a smile in your day because of the icon options or whatever, then that makes it worth it, in my opinion.

I added a comment on your later thread. If you want to treat yourself this way and enjoy all the pretties, go ahead. I'd rather spend my money on other things, so I'll probably only ever have a basic free account.
