Great that we are getting so many chapters. I love the writing of Mrs. Marlow and Doris in this chapter, they are just right. I am a bit disappointed in Nicola however. From being a capable person who can sail round the world, make running repairs to a boat in the Southern Ocean, etc, she has become unable to oil a gate and needs a big strong man to do it for her? Come on Nicola, stop being self-pitying and pull yourself together! Must be the pregnancy hormones or something. I hope she will ultimately be able to find a fulfilling job to do and not just be a mum. Do we get to see any more of the senior Merricks in future chapters? Obviously Mr. Merrick approves of Nicola but how does she get on with Mrs. M? And how happy was Mrs. M with the marriage I wonder?
