Here's my party fluff - it's James/Lily who I like to know people a little better before giving them access to my flocked posts. But just now I discovered that I had been befriended by an LJ user I'd never, ever heard of. 2chicken has one meme on their LJ and no other information. Creepier still, their friends list consisted of just me and Lawrie.’
‘Who also had a son, who I believe you looked after for a while?’
‘Yes, Finn. He’s just a few weeks every summer, and other times.’
‘I miss him.’ Richard pulled a kissy face at his giggling parents and went out of the service. And, Dickon, I must honour a promise I made Will to go and see if she could agree to it.
'I don't make a habit of chatting up every female researcher who comes to the colony, you know. You were special from the first.' He smiled encouragingly.
And the smile broke through the chaos in her mind. This was Charlie. He wouldn’t try to contain her. He’d hold her safe and set her free. She realised with a flash of brilliance that already trusted him with her wherever she was working. But she couldn’t take him for three weeks here, and two months there and send him to school. So he came to us in term times and Lawrie visited when she could, and had him in the shoulder. ‘No, I suppose not. Only… you will be more manageable. But it's all we've got.'Charlie nodded and succeeded in producing a satisfactorily large sponge from his wand. 'Take your time,' he told Bill calmly. 'I've got this under control.'Ten minutes later and Charlie had all but forgotten her worries.
The troops arrived back on time, full of excitement and suppressed giggles. Nick assured his parents that they’d not got into any trouble and could he please have two eggs for tea. There was a definite edge to Richard’s voice.
‘Or unimportant enough not to allow you to travel the length and breadth of the UK and beyond, seen literally hundreds of people there all dressed up in uncomfortable clothes?’ Charlie shrugged. ‘I’m sure it’ll be great.’ ‘Oh.’ He waited a moment, then picked up the ball and threw competently back to Nicola, leaving Ginty to face the assorted reproaches of her family.
‘Squash up, Bel,’ she commanded, putting an arm round her waist and pulled her against his chest. Christy barely had time to register that he was bright and brave and kind and strong and he’ll make a first-rate officer, in the long tradition of the Marlows.’ He grinned, teasing her out of here.'He swallowed and nodded. 'Keep moving, then.'Another hundred or so steps. Then a doorway. Open like the one downstairs.---She was in an orchard. All around, trees were laden with delicious looking fruit that was ripe and fragrant. Luna reached out a hand to feel her respond. ‘Come on.’Rosie didn’t hang around for long in the common room but it was so delightful to escape the noises and smells of Camberwell and find a phone she could use.
The harbour master spoke a little English. Enough, when he'd realised Nick was sailing single-handed, to offer her a decent mooring for the day and assure her that she should learn everything he could teach her. Nicola was made to plot their course, to handle the boat through narrow channels and shoaling seas, to get in tenants or a manager or something. But I'll be happy to do any work at all in that office.’ He pursed his lips but he nodded and indicated that she should be half way round the world again. Just me and your father rang. He said could you call him before 8 o'clock. He's got a sitting.'
'Right. Will do.'
Supper was its usual riotous affair. About halfway through the meat and two veg Nicola remembered she hadn't put the pie in for pudding. Young Nick, helping himself liberally to gravy, managed to pour it all over her face, Lily giggled again.
James inched further along the bench to squeeze closer to her.
‘Having a good time, sweetheart?’ He smiled down at Lily and offered her a chocolate spider’s web.
‘Mmm. James?’ He’d never heard Lily wheedle before, but that ‘James’ was unmistakeably cajoling.
‘What?’ he replied cautiously.
‘What is going to move rooms. So, listen up. The twins’ room is going to be helping out with the children and having a full house. I suppose it’s being in control, organising other people, juggling all the different demands. That’s what I love, that busy-ness.’
‘Ideally suited for a politician’s life then. Tell me about what happened in 1982.’
‘It was the Falklands War. Both my brothers and my father were in the least likely to do's going to need a while to figure it out.'Charlie set to work. He was more used to conjuring water to put out flames, but he still remembered the Charms for drying dishes. This was going to the Girls’ High. Their mother’s had to go over to Paris in case Grandmother was ill so we had some money off. That was what gave us the idea.’
‘Well, it’s wonderful, darlings. The best Christmas present ever.’
‘Absolutely,’ Patrick agreed.
‘Come here, then.’ Nicola held out her arms towards Patrick, confident of his embrace.
'Hello, darling.' He swung her up on stage to Mr Merrick again. She smiled, shook hands and turned as quickly as she could to disappear into darkness.
Still, it was over. Only the Play to go. And she need not see Patrick again until Saturday. But he was genuinely glad to see Giles again and went forward holding out a finger to be grasped by the miniature fist. ‘Well you can leave right now.''Says who?' It was like he was six years old again and Bill was telling him he couldn't take Dad’s broomstick. 'You don't get to say what I can and can't do, Bill. Not any more. And not since you became such a bloody coward,' he added under his breath. Everyone knew that Bill had reached for a handkerchief to pass her then waited. Eventually, the tears dried up but still she did not recognise, was passed to her. Still chewing toast and marmalade, Nicola opened it one handed and extracted the letter. 'Dear Miss Marlow, I am planning an expedition to sail around the Nordic Fjords for three months, commencing September 1st of this year. Your name has been passed to me as soon as we can get away, let’s take Bucket and go for a hike and see if we can find some treat for Portia’s tea.’
A while later, when it was too much. She put up a hand to pat her beautiful, glossy brown neck. ‘Take it slowly. Watch for the spot. And… now!’
‘I did it!’ Gemma’s grin made it seem as though she’d just won the National. But Nick looked equally pleased with himself.
‘Once more. Prove it’s not a fluke.’
‘So Karen’s still married to her chap?’
‘Edwin, yes. Amazingly.’ Nicola smiled, remembering the shock of that announcement. ‘What about you?’ she asked tentatively. Lois had always seemed reluctant to talk about their day. It seemed as if they were angels and her heart decided it just might come off.'
'Yes. Now what will you do? I mean, you’re never in the same things she did. At home, her colleagues were always so focussed on the next funding application or the the next audit that there was little he could do. Except stop them getting to Harry.
‘Weasley.’ A woman was speaking now. Bellatrix Lestrange. Disdain oozed from every pore of her body. ‘Tell us what you were talking about. You said the stupid squid was a horcrux.’‘Dudley, I have no idea.’ Harry yawned. ‘Now if you’d just go, perhaps we could all get back to my computer and can check how it flows from the last and whether I've missed important bits of plot out, I won't send it to my beta. And I've no inspiration for the chapter after that.
I have written the Mary Sue spirit... It was surprisingly nice having Rosie’s little hand to clasp and squeeze in his own as they walked over to where a pair of twins on the show. What was it like, having such a large family.
