For a while now, I've noticed a number of very beautiful things on various craft blogs I occasionally frequent. These things go by the name of 'doll quilt', which really only describes their size, not their function. Anyway I was just deciding to have a go at one of these tomorrow when I stumbled across this Doll Quilt Swap and entered on impulse. In just a few weeks time I will be the happy owner of a beautiful small piece of needlework executed by someone else. Hooray! And I will have had fun making something lovely to send to brighten up someone else's day. Double hooray! Can't wait to get my instructions...

That's a nice idea. The pitures were pretty. Good luck with it. And, of course, one of the nice things is that the person you send it to will appreciate the amount of work you put into it.

I laughed at 10% of entrants being called Sarah or Sara. The proportion of Sarahs in my daughter's year at school is almost that. Even more bizarrely, all the oboe players (on of my daughter's instruments) seem to be called either Sarah or Harriet.

The doll quilt sounds lovely...

We have a couple that we use for placemats or for putting hurricane lights on.

Oh wonderous Brit Picker! Would Fred and George do this when they say something in unison? Or is it 'just so American?'

‘I think this is the most beautiful tree we’ve ever had,’ said Arthur.

‘You say that every year,’ said Fred and George in unison. ‘Pepper and Salt,’ they said, joining pinkies for luck.

Well, they wouldn't use the word 'pinkies' for their little fingers. But I think they might join them for luck, or they might say 'Jinx'. I'm not quite sure of the significance of this but we always used to say it when I was at school!

It now reads

‘Jinx!’ they said, laughing and hooking little fingers for luck.

If friends or siblings inadvertently said the same thing, one would say 'Bread and Butter' and the other would say 'Pepper and Salt'. Then we'd hook baby fingers for good luck.

Thank you, Oh Font of Knowledge!
