Fabulous article from the Times by Tom Wright* on Easter:

For at least 200 years the West has lived on the dream that we can bring justice and beauty to the world all by ourselves...

*He is currently the Bishop of Durham, but I remember him vividly from his time as chaplain of Worcester College, Oxford. He gave a series of four hour-long talks on Isaiah 40-55 which were absolutely life-changing for me and still inspire me in the task of being a Christian theologian.

ETA: somewhat appropriately, an egg: Adopt one today!. And look! It's pink and green. ;)

It'a an interesting article. I think he is commenting on, and arguing against, what I would describle as religion without faith, a modern phenomenon of "watering down" the bits of christianity that depend on faith and cannot be explained on any other terms. I think he is right - what is a religion if its adherents have no faith and brush the more challenging aspects to one side? Without the resurrection, in my opinion, there seems little more to christianity than a vague spiritual belief in a supreme being. I can understand non-belief (well I would) but not a pick-and-mix belief system.

Exactly. 'If Christ were not raised we are to be pitied more than all men'. Something I have never understood is people who say things like 'I admire your faith' or 'I wish I had your faith' as if faith itself is worth something, even when it is directed towards something false or worthless.

I can understand non-belief too, having been a non-believer for quite a long time.

Thank you for the link. Hearing the resurrection story again this morning has as usual made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
