Needs must

There was fairly general consensus that both 'needs posting' and 'needs to be posted' are normal spoken English, but that 'needs to be posted' is preferred in formal written English. Many people thought that 'needs posted' was just wrong, but a significant number recognised it as a regional variation.
I was surprised, however, that this was only recognised as a Scottish variation. Just now, I heard a Northern Irish woman on the radio saying 'needs improved'. And I'm sure I remembered it as an American idiom (maybe from the South?).
