It's Nancy and Susan from Swallows and Amazons, sailing one of the little ships to Dunkirk.  Beautifully written and utterly tear-jerking.  I think this is probably one to enjoy even if you haven't read the original series.

Thanks for the recs. I read the ones you linked to earlier. Nancy and Susan going to Dunkirk sounds wonderful. Did you know they're making a new film of the book? It sounds quite promising and all suggestions that it should be updated were firmly squashed apparently

I've just read "Their Finest Hour". That was wonderful. I'm so pleased you posted the link. I always wondered about what happened in WW2 to them. Of course, the boy Roger was based on did survive and invented the inhaler for asthmatics (I think - that was dragged from some memory of an interview with him on R4 many, many years ago).
