I do not think that word means what you think it means

So, I was just looking at the adult education programme in my local area to see if there's anything fun to sign up for. I was very excited to find two weekly classes (one morning, one evening) for spinning. Which is a thing I've been wanting to learn for a while.

Luckily, before signing up, I checked where the classes are held. In the leisure centre. In a room full of bikes.

And the goal is to sweat as much as possible, force the blood pump to work hard and improve cardiovascular health - not to produce bundles of lovely yarn. I know, sad isn't it? I wondered about it the first time I heard the word used like that too.

How could you have lived in the States and not known what 'spinning' was? Perhaps you just didn't expect it to be used in that way on your side of the pond?

My non-crafty self would rather 'spin' on a stationary bike, but that's just me.

I never went to a gym in the US, despite repeated attempts to persuade me. But I do know a lot of American craft bloggers who spin wool.

I've never been to a spinning class, and rarely go to the gym (not at all in something like four years -- unless you count the pool), but it seems to be talked about (around the same time I started hearing the word 'Pilates' being bandied about by others)

Spinning would be an interesting craft to learn. If you ever have a go I'd like to see the results. I wouldn't know what spinning in this context is either and I go to a gym three or four times a week.

Spinning in that sense has been around in the UK for years! Apparently they really shout at you for 'motivation.' Ugh. I hate exercise classes - fine for people who are already healthy and have no joint problems but really really bad otherwise. I went through a few phases of going to the gym, and every time I ended up worse off than when I started. Never again. If they have Iyengar yoga classes where you are though, I'd definitely recommend it.

Hope you find a way to learn the right kind of spinning! But actually I'd have thought it was something you can learn yourself with your amazing craftiness! :D

I like to be shown how to do things and I like doing them with other people. Spinning can wait for a while.
