The synchronised swimming is on!  I love this event.  I never see it except at the Olympics and I was worried I'd missed it.  I love it because everyone is always so snooty about it.  I love that they wear makeup and jewellery and that they lose marks if they stop smiling.  The Japanese girls are amazing in their interpretation of the music.  I have no idea how they manage to keep time with the music while they're underwater.

They lose points if they stop smiling? LOL...I didn't know that.

There is something goofy and charming about it. I love to watch it too.

We haven't got it on here. I think I'd rather it than the softball that's being shown. Of course in another hour we have the entrancing prospect of the Australian men's basketball team being absolutely trounced by the USA. It is hard to see any other outcome other than a lose byt quite a hefty margin. However, if I'm still awake, I won't have any issues of whether to support Australia or not.

My mum did synchronised swimming for years. She had the nose-clip and everything, but not the waterproof make-up. To the best of my knowledge, they never performed in public and I certainly never got to see her do it. I don't think that smiling would have been compulsory at that level.

I used to do this! It actually feels like the least elegant thing ever when you're doing it...much treading water etc.

You keep time with the music underwater by counting; it can go horribly wrong! :)

How strange! I was just recently ranting about synchronized events (swimming, diving), and how I can't stand to watch them! A large part of it, I think, is that I don't understand the scoring. But an even bigger part is that I just don't like synchronized anything. I suppose I'm too individualistic for that. :-) People shouldn't be scored by how closely they match each other. Then there's also a cynical part of me that just thinks this is an attempt to multiply the nr. of Olympic events at which certain countries always win. Why not synchronized gymnastics? Synchronized running? (oka 3-legged race) If they put their mind to it, I'm sure they can synchronize anything - and then you can do it with 2, 4, 8 people or however many it works. Argh!
