'I didn't know you wore glasses.'
Charlie flushed a little self-consciously but nodded. 'Doc says I have to start. Can't see the dragons clearly enough.' With animals like that, perfect vision wasn't just a bonus, it could mean the difference between life and death.
Girlyswot watched him push the frames back onto his nose. 'They suit you.'
He gave her a look. 'Don't be ridiculous.'
'What?' She crossed her arms and prepared to sulk. 'I wear glasses all the time. Are you saying they make me look ugly?'
Charlie sighed, put down his newspaper and began to speak slowly and carefully, in the sort of voice he used when two-year-old Victoire needed something explaining to her. 'Your glasses look lovely. They... I don't know, it's like they're part of you. You spend all that time reading and doing things on your computer...'
Girlyswot had the grace to blush at that. Charlie didn't need to know exactly what proportion of her time on the computer was actual work.
'...so they suit you. But me? I work with my hands, and with ten-ton fire-breathing dragons. These...' he waved the glasses around, '...look ridiculous on me.'
'Well maybe you should try getting contact lenses then.'
'What?'
###
'Yes, Mr Weasley, we can certainly find lenses that will suit your needs. Might I suggest that a disposable lens would be best?'
Charlie shrugged.
Girlyswot nodded. 'I think that would be a good idea.'
'Excellent. And would you be interested in our range of tinted lenses? We have quite a number of different styles in our new Fashion Range. These, for example,' he pointed to a rather pale, translucent lens, 'are Charmed to match the colour of the sky. It only works outside, of course.'
'Of course,' Charlie murmured, rolling his eyes.
'Or this very special lens will reflect the mood of the wearer. It has settings for Stormy, Calm, Hopeful, and Enticing.'
Girlyswot leaned forward to look at that one. She wondered if Will Wood wore contact lenses.
'I don't need anything fancy,' Charlie was saying. 'There's nothing wrong with my eyes.'
'Oh but...' She'd interrupted before she knew it.
Charlie turned to her, his blue eyes doing an excellent job of conveying his Stormy outlook without any magical enhancement. 'But what?'
Girlyswot ignored him, and asked the assistant, 'Do you have any lenses that will allow the wearer just to change the colour of his eyes?'
'What's wrong with the colour of my eyes?'
She grinned. 'Absolutely nothing.'
'So...?'
Girlyswot reached up to kiss his cheek. 'Indulge me?'
'I do too much of that,' he replied, rubbing the scar across his forehead as if in memory of something.
###
'Now what?'
'Lets do brown first.'
Charlie had his new lenses and Girlyswot had ordered him to try them on in different colours for her to describe the effect.
'Well?'
She tilted her head. 'Not too awful, I suppose. But imagine trying to write about them.'
He frowned. 'Why wouldn't you write about them?'
'No similes. Brown like... mud? bark? Chocolate's good but you can really only use it once, and it's already so overdone.'
'Brown like shi...?'
'Exactly. Switch to green. Oh, that's really lovely. I can see why everyone falls for Harry.'
Charlie humphed.
'Not everyone,' she assured him. 'Mossy, sea green, leaf green... Oh yes, that works very nicely. But not with your hair. Too clichéd by half.'
'Can we get on with this?'
'Fine. Blue, then.'
He muttered the spell to switch the lenses back to a clear transparency. Girlyswot sighed. There was her Charlie. 'Oh, mmm. No, stop, I have to write this first. Right. As blue as the first delicate bluebell of the spring. Brilliant as the noonday sky when the sun has burnt away the mists of morning. Deep and clear as the water in a secret lagoon on our Pacific island hideaway. Blue as a...'
'Flame of a Swedish Short-Snout,' Charlie offered.
She shot him a withering look. 'Blue as a sapphire, rich as velvet, and sparkling as a waterfall.'
He made a gagging noise.
'Oh all right. But it's better than what St Margarets came up with.'
'Did she do any wand jokes?'
'No. She said you have "melting chocolate eyes that beg to be licked."'
'Ewww!'
'I know.'
'What else did she say?'
'Oh, um. "Eyes as brown as the mud you track into the house."'
He laughed. 'Well at least that one doesn't make me want to vomit.'
'And she said that your eyes were as brown as the trousers that should be on the floor by now.'
Charlie looked down. 'But I'm wearing jeans.'
Girlyswot reached for his belt. 'That's exactly my point.'
