I just wrote a 1500 word scene which would be the prologue for a fun Regency romance that I think I could write 50,000 words of in November. So I'm going to sign up tomorrow...

Maybe.

What else do I have to do in November? 2 major papers (neither started at all). 1 revised paper (not too much to do on this). Read another 30 or so books for the reading course. Teach 3 hours a week and do related grading and preparation. Prepare for 3 exams in early December. Thanksgiving. Various commitments at church. Make some Christmas presents. Write my Yuletide fic.

Hmm.

I think I'd better think it out again.

Stop! You can't do it this November! Remember me? Voice of your conscience? White angel on your shoulder?

If you want to do Nano we can all hold one of our own some other month.

Be strong.

Very good. Must remember the voice of reason.

Oh, but it would be so fun...

No, right. Sensible. Wait until life is slightly less manic.

Thank you!

Anytime. You'll thank me at the end of November when all of those projects are done. Besides, you have a sewing machine now! You can use any extra time you might have to sew if the spirit moves you.

Be strong! You are NOT going to sign up this year - you are going to file away that scene, and start keeping notes and little snippets when anything else comes to mind. Then next year you can write it!

But you're right, I'm not going to sign up this year.

Save the story until you've got time to do it. (I still want to read it mind!) I think this nano whatsit sounds as if it puts a lot of unnecessary pressure on people to write. Do it when you have the time and the inclination. I'm sure Mary will keep you writing when the time is right. (And if you want a beta, who's history of the period is actually quite good, all things considered, I'm happy to look at it.)

How's the jewellry-making going, or haven't you doone it yet?

No, jewellery making is next Saturday. Today was do some work that I've happily ignored since Tuesday, then sit around trying not to sign up for Nano. It's not so much the pressure, I find, as the excuse it gives me to ignore other stuff and write.

But you're right, I'm not going to do it now. I've thought of something much more fun...

I'm still not convinced Nano does anyone any good. Most people seem to end up with a draft SOOOO rough that they take much more time during the revision process than they would have otherwise. Less time in at the beginning means more time in at the end. Plus a lot of stress. Why put yourself through all of that stress and put your papers in jeopardy to come up with a rushed draft?

DON'T DO IT!

And just to add my two knuts as well. This from a previous post of yours:

BUT it is now getting worryingly close to NaNoWriMo time of year. I am NOT signing up. That way madness lies. I'm doing way too many courses this semester as it is. Just because I am not going to the big conference in San Diego, thus freeing up, ooh, three days in November, does NOT mean it will be okay to write 50,000 words that month.

You are all my witnesses and I trust you to hold me accountable to this.

I'm definitely holding you accountable. Do it another month! No. Need. To. Do. This. Now. You're not going down that road. Make a sharp turn and continue down the narrow path you were already on. No NaNoWroMo. Your work will suffer if you do, and I mean all the work. not just your studes, but your writing as well. Write when you've more time to spend on the task.

*hugs*
