The thing that disturbs me here (not in this chapter, but a previous one) is the lack of forgiveness or real friendship toward Lois. Setting it up like that (you took me completely by surprise) and then not allowing some sort of resolution. Yes, I know that Nicola is not the forgiving type--we've got lots of evidence of that from her youth--but surely age and experience would have mellowed her? Her minor gesture, the merest sentence, seems so futile.
Anyway, I liked that set-up very much but keep thinking more would have come of it. But maybe that's because I always liked Lois (in an odd way) and feel like she deserved redemption, not abandonment and death.
