Not even just people in general but a bookstore chain of some form or another, I read about it two days ago - apparently they are saying that there is precedent.

Arthur Conan Doyle wrote a book appearing to kill of Sherlock Holmes and then they persuaded him to resurrect the characters some years later. Personally I just think it's a PR stunt for the bookstore chain.
