Hmm, I know that area quite quite well, considering that my husband's family hails from there. And considering I've grown up about 100km down south from there. The thing is, there is only one ski "resort" in that whole part of Romania - the region is called Bucovina, btw. That ski resort is in Vatra Dornei, and consists of precisely one slope and one ski lift. I'm completely mystified as to what that website mentioned about skiing in Valea Putnei, but my guess is that they have a cleared bit of slope where you can *hike* up the mountain, and then ski down.
As gorgeous as Bucovina is (and to me, it's the 2nd most beautiful place on earth, after Ceahlau mountain, which is where I grew up), it is also woefully underdeveloped. Mountains upon mountains, 6 months of winter, and no skiing! ARGH!
On the other hand, it makes the premise of your story that much more believable, b/c it is truly easy to hide away in a log cabin over there, away from the world. (But don't count on any rental car company to come to your rescue there!) Well, like I said, sorry for getting anal on the details - I guess it was an opportunity to talk about "back home," too. :-) I wrote about unknown places, too, and got frustrated with the amount of research I had to put in, and still not get it perfectly. But... if you ever want to visit the Bucovina monasteries (Putna being one of the most famous), let me know. I strongly advise going in the summer, though. :-)
