LOL!

There appears to be a contestant on this week's Brain of Britain called 'Mr By-The-Way'. Which is surely a character in a Dickens novel, not a real name?

As you yourself indicated, this is a hyphenated name. He must be the son of Mr. By, The-By - formerly U Ba-Thet-Ba (= Thursday, Calm Thursday) of Myanmar (http://www.myanmars.net/myanmar-culture/myanmar-naming-system.htm), - and of Miss Reta Way, probably of the US (http://www.thinkbabynames.com/meaning/0/Reta).

By the way, did you catch his first name? Is it Scott, btw?

You mean Dickens made all those names up.

Sounds like he is a misplaced wizard, as undoubtedly Bytha Way is an offshoot of Diagon Alley.

Not apropos of this at all, you and I are both on the Yuletide roundup today - I am saving your Little Women story to read when I've finished tidying under the bed. It makes me look forward to the whole thing cranking up again come October, or whenever it is.

Ah, I wondered why I'd got a faint smattering of new reviews in the last 24 hours!
